IT workers are worried, younger ones want respect – Gartner

Less than a third of IT workers have firm plans to stay at their current organization, according to a new survey, and what they value in a new job depends on their age.

According to Gartner’s latest global labor market survey, only 29.1% of IT employees have a firm plan to stay with their current employer.

Depending on where these IT professionals are located, this number could be much lower. In Asia, only 19.6% have a strong intention to stay in their current job; in Australia and New Zealand, only 23.6% think the same; and in Latin America, 26.9%. Even in Europe, the top performing region, only four in ten IT workers (38.8%) expect to stay in their current organizations, according to the study.

Overall, according to the survey, IT professionals are 10.2% less likely to stay at work than non-IT employees. This is the lowest of all corporate functions.

For many IT workers who are currently in peak demand due to the pandemic and the rise of hybrid jobs, it’s time to rethink careers and lives.

“There has never been a better time to find your career path and the company you want to work for and your value proposition than now,” said Graham Waller, vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner. “IT workers will never have more choice than now.”

The Gartner Global Labor Market Survey includes over 18,000 employees in 40 countries, including 1,755 IT employees in Q421.

A Gartner survey found that 65% of employees believe the pandemic has forced them to rethink the role of work in their lives. And 58% indicated that the pandemic has changed their views on the desirability of their current workplace.

“IT is an overheated job market right now,” Waller said. “There is a big talent competition going on there. Sometimes we even compare it to the competition to attract the best athletes, especially in key skill areas like cyber security, data science, cloud and agile development, etc.”
